Marley is in prison, serving a life-sentence for the murder of her sister, Charlotte. Each of the following weekly episodes sets out Marley's letters to her solicitor, Otto Loser. For Otto, the case is already over. In this first episode of The Scarlet Godwins, Otto decides to go on a long walk, not only to reflect on Marley's case, but to consider the ways in which it changed his life.

In her second letter to Otto, Marley begins to discuss the shadier politics of being a prisoner, and reminisces nostalgically about her days as a child on the run. In the dialogue Otto is having with himself, walking through the city, he tries to imagine what Charlotte's life might have been like when she was a girl.

Marley's third letter is about loss, and how her worldview was shattered when she found out, aged sixteen, that the Albert Square she'd been looking for, never existed. Otto's contemplative walk takes him to everything he knows about the disconnect between Hugo Timlyn and Charlotte Godwin, when they were in their teens.

A packed episode in which Marley elaborates on a number of remarkable assertions, including the claim that drugs no longer have any psychoactive effects on her. She discusses a game of no-blinking, fondly recalls a burglary, and mentions her sister slightly more freely. Meanwhile, deep in thought, Otto pieces together Charlotte Godwin's university years. In doing so, he is led further into the nature of his relationship with a person who is vital to him; the person he is talking to in his head.
